Dear friends,

Wake up World – Toronto
#wakeupworld is a week full of The Save Movement vigils around the world where activists bring nonvegan or nonactivist friends and family to a vigil from August 25-31. August 28th is also Tolstoy’s birthday and World Save Day and the Official March for Animal Rights is on August 25th (or September 1st) so it’s a good opportunity to get more people involved. Save groups can do a full week of vigils or just an event during this particular week. Please tag your photos from the vigils with #WakeUpWorld

Canada’s Largest ‘Ribfest’ Vegan Outreach
Please join us on September 2-3, 5 pm, Spencer Smith Park, Burlington, ON
RSVP: event page

Please join us! This is a perfect location and event to do vegan outreach. We were there last year and it was amazing! We will be giving out FREE vegan food samples, vegan literature and paying people $5 cash to watch an 8 minute Animal Equality virtual reality documentary of a pig’s life from birth to slaughter that really makes videos reconsider their ‘food’ choices.

Climate Vegan‘s core message is: Help save the planet by going vegan and becoming active.

“Without meat and dairy consumption, global farmland use could be reduced by more than 75% – an area equivalent to the US, China, European Union and Australia combined – and still feed the world. Loss of wild areas to agriculture is the leading cause of the current mass extinction of wildlife.”

Let’s mobilize to fight climate change
As the world heats up from human-caused climate change, record-setting fires rage across the planet.
The headlines tell us what’s happening, but not what to do about it.
The Save Movement is working to set up a Climate Vegan working group to produce a plan of action and to launch campaigns to address this most urgent of disasters. We will involve our 460+ chapters around the world. Climate change is happening and it is absolutely critical that we mobilize to fight it before it’s too late.
We need all the help we can get. Please join us!

The Climate Vegan plan of action could include campaigns such as:
1. Screenings of films such as Cowspiracy at universities and other fertile grounds.
2. Regular demonstrations such as the yearly Earth Day chalking and leafletting event.
3. Marches to draw the public’s attention
4. A long march such as Toronto to Ottawa (400 kilometers) to engage the political establishment
5. Reforestation programs
6. Advertising campaigns
7. Training program, including a guidebook

Please watch Windsor-Detroit Farm Animal Save‘s video:
“Some slaughterhouses have what they call a ‘Judas Goat.’ Animals on transport trucks are understandably terrified and confused. To make offloading animals easier, the Judas Goat’s job is to lead them off the truck. They see her and trust her. They follow her thinking she must know the way out. They follow her to their deaths.”

Hi, I’m Lily the Mother Goat. Please follow/like my Instagram and Facebook pages.

I was rescued before being slaughtered. But tens of billions of mothers and their babies are killed by the animal farming industry every single year.
If you do not wish to support this abuse,
Please go vegan.

Weekly vigils and outreach with Toronto-area SavesToronto Pig Save has a firm commitment to hold at least three vigils or other vegan outreach events per week. We currently hold a Pig Save vigil in Burlington together with Cow Save and Chicken Save vigils in Toronto. We encourage everyone to attend a vigil. The more people who attend, the harder it is for society to ignore our protests of the abhorrent exploitation and cruelty to animals. Attending vigils is a daunting, traumatic, but empowering experience. Please join us. Scroll down for vigil schedule.

Leo Tolstoy defines the duty to bear witness as: “When the suffering of another creature causes you to feel pain, do not submit to the initial desire to flee from the suffering one, but on the contrary, come closer, as close as you can to him who suffers, and try to help him.” – from A Calendar of Wisdom

Melbourne Cow Save and Melbourne Goat Save came together to hold their World Plant Milk Day Outreach. They report:
“Thanks to Particle Cinnamon who donated some beautiful fresh plant milks and to Rebel_Kitchen for donating milk as well for the public to sample. It was busy with people sampling milks they have never tried before or for some people never even thought to try.
We had fresh cashew, hazelnut, brazil, macadamia, almond, hemp milks and soy rebel mylk. There are so many plant based alternatives out there now that you don’t need to be contributing to the pain and suffering caused in the dairy industries. You can make your own or buy the many on offer now at your local supermarkets.

Reykjavík Whale Save held their first vigil on August 20. Please watch as #JaneUnChained contributing reporter Dani Rukin films the pregnant whale being butchered at an Icelandic whaling station.

Dani’s documentation and livestream of the vigil made national Icelandic front page headline news in Iceland’s largest and most widely read newspaper, Fréttablaðið:“Pregnant fin whale dragged to shore.”

Kumanovo Animal Save held their first vigil on August 25 as part of the Wake Up World week of vigils. They report:
“Today we visited one of the slaughterhouses in Kumanovo. We spent a few moments with the animals, and this is what we witnessed.
The owner of the slaughterhouse explained how every one of the animals that pass through here is killed in a humane way. Does this seem humane to you? Is there even such thing as humane slaughter when someone desperately wants to live?”

Please watch: Nikšić Animal Save held their first vigil on August 25 as part of the Wake Up World week of vigils.

Sintra Horse Save held their first vigil on August 19. They report:
“On a Sunday afternoon, in 30+ degrees, the horses continued to pull the carriages in the village of Sintra.
On behalf of the whole organization, we would like to thank all the volunteers who were untiring yesterday under that same heat.
They could all have gone to the beach, but they chose to stay with us and fight one of the many oppressions. Animals have no choice but we do! And we expect to see these guys in all the upcoming vigils. You are fantastic!
Yesterday we reached lots of people and hopefully some of them will join us and our vigils in the future. “

Please watch: Manchester Pig Save and That Vegan Couple bear witness.
“Thank you to everyone who joined us for our all-day vigil at Tulip Meats with travelling activists That Vegan Couple on their UK tour.
Over 60 activists attended including groups who travelled over from Germany, Finland, Portugal and Iceland ahead of this week’s The Official Animal Rights March 2018 | London.
We bore witness to 15 trucks of pigs on their way in to slaughter, moments later to have their lungs filled with CO2 gas then to be drained of their blood.”

Please watch: Guildford Animal Save persist in the face of transport truck changes while bearing witness at ABP Guildford:
“…with the rise in many new articulated trucks with slats only at the top, it means not only are the cows travelling mostly in darkness but that bearing witness is made difficult.
While we do not want the animals to be in those trucks at all, for all the while that they are- we want to see them. The Save Movement is about shedding a light on an area not seen by the public eye.”

Welcome Cape Cod Animal Save. Find them on Facebook.

Newark Animal Save held their first vigil on August 21 at American Halal “Meats” Inc. They report:
“Thank you to everyone who came out to bear witness. A total of 6 trucks came to American Halal in Newark. There were so many animals, they couldn’t move. The trucks were filthy as they were forced to stand in their own waste.
The animals were terrified and confused, most were clearly sick and some were very thin.
Knowing yesterday you were here and today you’re gone is heartbreaking. We will continue to bear witness to your suffering and do everything we can to make it end.
We see you. We’re sorry. We’re trying.
RIP 8/21/18 “

Toronto Pig Save started in December 2010, with a promise to the pigs of doing a minimum of three vigils and vegan outreach events each week, all year round. We bear witness as a community of pigs, cows, chickens and other farmed animal victims in slaughterhouse trucks. The animals want us to be present and, with the most pleading eyes, ask for our help when we see them through the portholes of transport trucks. Just as if we were in those horrid trucks, we would want the whole community to be there fighting for our freedom, liberation, rights, and equality. In a way, we are there. All life is one and, “when (wo)men wish to harm others, they really do evil to themselves,” Leo Tolstoy said in his animal rights story “Esarhaddon, King of Assyria”. It’s our positive duty and obligation to act in the present to try to stop the most egregious injustices before us.
“When the suffering of another creature causes you to feel pain, do not submit to the initial desire to flee from the suffering one, but on the contrary, come closer, as close as you can to her who suffers, and try to help her.” – Leo Tolstoy
In seven years, The Save Movement has grown to over 460 Save groups around the world. Our dream is to have regular vigils at every slaughter plant worldwide. We regularly give seed money to new Save groups and require funds for literature, posters, subway ad campaigns ( and vegan outreach events.
Make animal liberation your priority in life! Think of 10 kind things you can do each day and encourage your friends to do the same! Join us and participate in our weekly vigils, start a Save group in your community, and be a regular donor.
